Cells are the smallest unit of life, and each cell is a system nested within a system.
In Grade 8, students will develop their knowledge of organisms by focusing on the structure and function of cells in plants and animals. Our knowledge of cells has increased enormously since the middle of the twentieth century, and students will examine the implications of this knowledge for individuals, society, and the environment.

Cell Biology's impact in our lives - a short wrap-up project
Part A:
Consider one of the following three viewpoints about the use of genetically modified organisms:
(a) The practice should be banned because of known or potential environmental and social risks.
(b) Genetically modified plants should be used wherever possible.
(c) The use of Genetically modified plants can be approved for social benefit, but it should be closely regulated.
Which viewpoint most closely matches your own? Why?
(You should strive to provide 2 details with support)
Part B:
Conduct research on another genetically modified organism (GMO). What organism did you choose? Write a paragraph (minimum) in your own words of your findings and be sure to include your source of information.

Summative project information:
- This project can be completed in partners or alone
- There are 2 options:
*create a classroom bulletin board display (interactive) of the Cell unit or;
* create a model of a plant or animal cell (can be edible!!) - Part A - The model
Decide on the items you will use to create the model. Your project must be labelled. You may label each organelle (cell part) or put the names in the legend. Each model must include at least 8 organelles. Your project must include a legend that explains the basic function of each part of the cell.
- Part B – Report
Your Goal: Write a report that explains the basic structure & function of the cell. Provides the following information:
a. Title (Name of Cell)
b. Definition – What it is (A Cell is …)
c. Components or parts – What it consists of (structures in the cell)
d. Operations – How it works and what it’s used for
