Grade 8 Science Syllabus
2019-2020 Academic Year
Teacher: Mr. Hogendoorn
School Phone: (905) 728-4532
(Availability: Monday to Friday, 2:40 – 3:00)
Google Classroom:
8P: classroom.google.com/c/NDEyNTYzNTk5ODBa
8PAL: classroom.google.com/c/NDEyNTYzNTk5OTBa
Course Goals: Students will learn about Science through hands-on activities, creative assignments, and unit tests. Students will use the scientific method to collect and interpret data and report information.
Notebooks/Binders:
Each student will be expected to keep an organized class notebook/binder which may contain homework assignments (if not done online) and all class lecture notes necessary to complete assignments and prepare for quizzes/tests. The note taking process will be discussed in class.
Homework Assignments:
Students will be expected to complete all homework assignments and submit them by the expected date. All assignments will be graded on completeness and neatness. Incomplete assignments will initially receive a zero (0). A grade penalty of 5% per day will be given for late assignments. After 7 days, a permanent zero (0) will be given. Absent students will have a maximum of five (5) school days to make up and submit missed assignments for full credit. Students who anticipate extended absences should inform Mr. Hogendoorn so that appropriate arrangements can be made. Students who are absent from school should check the class website (http://monsieurhogendoorn.weebly.com) and the Google Classroom page to keep up with their assignments.
Quizzes and Tests:
To ensure student engagement during class, frequent open note quizzes will be given. It is each student’s responsibility to obtain notes from missed class periods. Chapter tests will be announced at least one (1) week in advance. If a student is not pleased with a test grade, that student may correct questions to earn additional points.
Grading:
Assignments, projects, classwork and homework will be counted as approximately 65% of the final grade, while quizzes/tests will count as approximately 25% of the final grade. Participation/attendance counts for 10%! Students are encouraged to check their progress by asking Mr. Hogendoorn at an appropriate time.
Attendance/Lateness:
Students should attend class regularly. Excessive lateness is disruptive and will not be tolerated.
Classroom Behavior Expectations:
Students are expected to:
•Be prompt
•Be prepared
•Be a polite and positive participant
•Be productive
•Be a peaceful problem solver
Additionally, all students are expected to follow the school rules as outlined by their homeroom teachers. Any deviation from these expectations will result in an appropriate consequence. Behavior that is disruptive to the learning of others will not be tolerated.
Consequences:
The disruptive student will be given a warning. After the second disruption, the student will attend a detention during lunch recess (length of time at Mr. Hogendoorn’s discretion). Further disruption will result in a call home. If the student’s behaviour does not improve, that student will be sent to the office.
